Scripture: "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot, but speak the things which we have seen and heard."
Reflection: Peter and John had been with the Lord. They had been eyewitnesses to His death, burial and resurrection. Shortly after Pentecost, Peter and John were proclaiming the message, but the leaders of the cities and the multitude of people were wanting to silence their message. Sharing the truth of the Gospel may mean we will face opposition. Peter and John maintained zeal for God and were compelled to share the message.
Application: With the most amazing message of all the things you could talk to someone about and that is more impactful than anything else you could ever share, pray the Lord would give you a zeal like that of Peter and John and then go out and seek and save the lost.
The New King James Version. (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Acts 4:19-20.
Scripture: "...for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Reflection: Jesus Christ's ministry involved the searching out and "saving" of the "lost." He continued this ministry until His death through ongoing interactions with others and His disciples to prepare them for the ministry even after His physical departure. Even when he was dying on the cross, another soul was brought to salvation.
Application: Given Jesus' ministry, are you personally searching out people to share the Gospel with and then making it your goal to share the Gospel with them? If not, will you make a plan to do it? Regardless of the response of those who hear the Gospel, you can be faithful to the same ministry Jesus had when you engage in evangelism.
The New King James Version, Lk 19:10. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982.
"But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things."
Reflection: In the account of Jesus Christ's death, Luke stated a few verses earlier that "He breathed His last" Luke 23:46. In just few verses later, Luke seems to have stated that "all His acquaintances" were there. Given this account, there were many witnesses to Jesus' death who had known and followed Him.
Application: The next time you hear a muslim or followers of some other religions make a statement that Jesus did not die on the cross, you can remind them that many people witnessed His death on the cross.
The New King James Version, Lk 23:49. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982.
Scripture: "And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together."
Reflection: In Jesus' message to His disciples, he was drawing attention to the harvest. Whether you are a "reaper" or a "sower," it doesn't matter, both "may rejoice together." "God" is the One who causes "the increase" anyway (1 Corinthians 3:7). Only He can change the heart. We are only to sow the seed and call them to respond.
Application: Are you laboring to sow seed and striving to reap? Be encouraged that no matter if you are a sower or a reaper, you are being faithful to the task of evangelism. Let this be a message of hope to persevere even when it doesn't look like there is a harvest.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jn 4:36.
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 2 Timothy 4:1–2, NKJV
Reflection: When Paul wrote to his trusted son in the faith, Timothy, he "charged" him with an instruction, "Preach the word!" He also told him when to do it... "in season and out of season." It sounds like an ongoing ministry of doctrinal proclamation to spread the message of God's word and it would include the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.
Application: We too are charged with spreading the Word of God found in the Bible. We need to be so filled with the Word of God that we pour forth God's wisdom when we encounter others. Study the Word and proclaim the Good News to others you meet.
